Maine lesson 4 of 6

Get an EIN and register with Maine Revenue Services

Once your Certificate of Formation is approved, your EIN identifies the LLC to the IRS and to banks, while a separate state registration sets up any Maine tax accounts you need.

Applying for the EIN

Apply for free directly on the IRS website. If the responsible party has a US social security number or ITIN, the EIN is issued immediately online; otherwise, the application is filed on Form SS-4 by fax or mail.

Registering with Maine Revenue Services

Most LLCs also register with Maine Revenue Services, either online at revenue.maine.gov or by mailing the Central Registration Application booklet, to cover sales and use tax, income tax withholding for employees, and any special taxes that apply to the business. Unemployment compensation tax and Paid Family and Medical Leave are registered separately with the Maine Department of Labor.

Opening the account

Bring the certified Certificate of Formation, your EIN confirmation letter, an operating agreement if you have one, and identification for signers and significant owners. Route all business income and expenses through this account from day one.

Key takeaways

  • The EIN is free and issued by the IRS, separate from any Maine state registration.
  • Register with Maine Revenue Services for sales tax, withholding or other applicable taxes.
  • Unemployment tax and Paid Family and Medical Leave register separately with the Department of Labor.
