New Jersey lesson 4 of 6
Get an EIN, register with NJ-REG and open a bank account
A New Jersey LLC needs two separate registrations before it can operate cleanly: a federal EIN from the IRS, and the state's own NJ-REG business registration.
Applying for the EIN
The EIN is free and issued directly by the IRS once the Public Records Filing is approved. If the responsible party has a US social security number or ITIN, the online application issues the number immediately.
The mandatory NJ-REG registration
Unlike the EIN, NJ-REG is a state requirement and applies to every business operating in New Jersey, not just those with employees or sales tax collection. It registers the LLC for the relevant state taxes and produces the Business Registration Certificate that banks, landlords and government agencies commonly request.
Skipping NJ-REG is one of the most common New Jersey compliance gaps. It has no filing fee, so there is no financial reason to delay it.
Opening the bank account
Bring the approved Public Records Filing, the EIN confirmation, the Business Registration Certificate and identification for signers. Keeping business and personal funds in separate accounts is what preserves the liability protection an LLC is meant to provide.
Key takeaways
- The EIN is free and comes from the IRS.
- NJ-REG registration is mandatory for every New Jersey business and has no state fee.
- Banks generally ask for the formation filing, the EIN letter and the Business Registration Certificate.
