Colorado lesson 4 of 6
Get an EIN and open a bank account
Colorado does not issue a separate state tax number at formation. The federal EIN from the IRS is what a bank, payment processor, or the Department of Revenue will use to identify your LLC.
Applying for the EIN
Apply on the IRS website once the Articles of Organization are approved. There is no charge. If the responsible party has a US social security number or ITIN, the EIN is issued immediately online; otherwise the application is filed on Form SS-4 by fax or post, which takes longer.
Opening the account
Bring the confirmed Articles of Organization, the EIN confirmation letter, an operating agreement, and identification for signers and significant owners. Colorado banks vary in what they ask of non-resident owners, so check ahead if nobody on the account is based in the state.
Running personal spending through the business account is one of the fastest ways to undermine the liability protection an LLC is meant to provide.
Key takeaways
- The EIN is free and comes from the IRS.
- Apply after the Articles of Organization are approved so details match.
- A separate business bank account is essential to keep the liability shield credible.
