Connecticut lesson 4 of 6
Get an EIN and register with the Department of Revenue Services
Your EIN identifies the LLC to the IRS and to banks. Registering separately with the Connecticut Department of Revenue Services is what sets up any state tax accounts your LLC actually needs.
Applying for the EIN
Apply for free directly on the IRS website once your Certificate of Organization is approved. If the responsible party has a US social security number or ITIN, the number is issued immediately online; otherwise the application is filed on Form SS-4 by fax or post.
Registering with DRS
Most LLCs register with the Connecticut Department of Revenue Services through its online registration process, separate from both the EIN and the Secretary of the State filing. If you sell taxable goods or services, you need a Sales and Use Tax permit before making sales. If you have employees, you need to register for withholding tax at the same time.
Opening the account
Take the filed Certificate of Organization, the EIN confirmation letter, an operating agreement if you have one, and identification for signers and significant owners to open a business bank account. Route all business income and expenses through it, since mixing personal and business funds is one of the fastest ways to undercut an LLC's liability protection.
Key takeaways
- The EIN is free and issued by the IRS.
- DRS registration is separate from the EIN and needed for sales tax or withholding accounts.
- Keep business and personal funds in separate accounts.
