Washington, DC lesson 1 of 6

Name your DC LLC

DC's naming rules follow the standard pattern, but the register you search is DLCP's, not a Secretary of State database, which is where people first go wrong.

Required wording

The name must contain Limited Liability Company, or the abbreviation LLC or L.L.C. It must be distinguishable on the DLCP record from existing DC entities and reserved names.

Restricted terms

Words suggesting banking, insurance or a connection with the District or federal government are restricted. Given how many DC businesses serve federal agencies, be careful with names implying official status or endorsement.

A trade name that differs from the registered LLC name must be registered separately with DLCP.

Checking and reserving

Search the DLCP corporate register through BOSS. Name reservation is available; check the current fee on the DLCP fee page, which is the same page that lists filing and biennial report fees.

Free Name Availability Check

🇺🇸 Check United States company name availability

Search the official United States state registry before you file. Opens the government portal in a new tab.

Tip: also confirm the .com domain and matching social handles are free before you commit.

Key takeaways

  • Use LLC, L.L.C. or the words in full.
  • The register is DLCP's, accessed through BOSS.
  • Trade names are registered separately with DLCP.
