Kansas lesson 6 of 6
Open a bank account and file your biennial Information Report
Once your Kansas LLC is formed, two things keep it in good standing: a properly separated bank account and the Information Report filed with the Secretary of State every two years.
Opening the account
Bring your confirmed Articles of Organization, EIN confirmation letter, an operating agreement if you have adopted one, and identification for signers and significant owners. Keep business income and expenses in this account rather than mixing them with personal funds.
Filing the Information Report
Starting in 2024, Kansas replaced its annual report with a biennial Information Report. LLCs formed in an even-numbered year file in each following even-numbered year, and LLCs formed in an odd-numbered year file in each following odd-numbered year, both due by April 15. Filing online costs $90; filing on paper with Form ILC costs $110. A series LLC must file its series information separately using the paper Form ILC, since series filings cannot currently be completed online.
Because the biennial cycle is still relatively new, it is worth confirming your specific due year directly on the Secretary of State's Information Reports page rather than assuming based on a prior annual-filing habit.
If you are unsure whether your LLC owes a report in the current year, check the Secretary of State's Information Reports page or your entity's record directly rather than guessing based on the year you formed.
If you miss it
An LLC that fails to file its Information Report risks forfeiture of good standing and eventual administrative dissolution by the Secretary of State. A dissolved LLC can generally apply for reinstatement by filing the outstanding reports and fees, but it loses good standing and the protection of its name in the meantime. Confirm the current penalty and reinstatement process on the Secretary of State's site, since Kansas updated its filing cycle recently and related procedures can change.
Key takeaways
- Keep a dedicated business bank account separate from personal funds.
- The Information Report is now biennial, due April 15, matching your formation year as odd or even.
- Filing online costs $90; filing on paper with Form ILC costs $110.
