Maryland lesson 1 of 6

Name your Maryland LLC

SDAT will reject Articles of Organization that clash with a name already on the Maryland charter record. Search first so you are not paying the filing fee twice.

Required wording

A Maryland LLC name must include Limited Liability Company, L.L.C., or LLC. There is no requirement to spell out Limited or Company in full, but the designator has to appear somewhere in the name.

  • Acceptable: Chesapeake Analytics LLC, Chesapeake Analytics, L.L.C.
  • Not acceptable: wording implying a bank, insurance company or government agency without the relevant approval

Checking availability

Search the Maryland Business Express business entity search before you draft the Articles. SDAT compares names for similarity, not just an exact match, so small punctuation or designator changes usually will not rescue a name that is already taken.

If you are not ready to file, Maryland lets you reserve a name for a limited period through SDAT for a modest fee. Most filers skip the reservation and go straight to the Articles once the name checks out clear.

Free Name Availability Check

🇺🇸 Check United States company name availability

Search the official United States state registry before you file. Opens the government portal in a new tab.

Tip: also confirm the .com domain and matching social handles are free before you commit.

Key takeaways

  • End the name with LLC, L.L.C. or the words in full.
  • SDAT checks for similarity, not just an exact match.
  • Search Maryland Business Express before drafting the Articles of Organization.
