Missouri lesson 4 of 6

Get an EIN and open a bank account

Missouri does not issue a state tax number when the Articles of Organization are approved. Your federal EIN, plus a separate Department of Revenue registration if you owe Missouri taxes, are what banks and the state will ask for.

Applying for the EIN

Apply on the IRS website once the Articles of Organization are approved. It is free. If the responsible party has a US social security number or ITIN, the EIN is issued immediately online. Otherwise the application goes in on Form SS-4 by fax or post.

Registering with the Department of Revenue

If the LLC will collect sales tax, withhold employee income tax, or owes other Missouri business taxes, register using Form 2643A, the Missouri Tax Registration Application for corporations and LLCs, either on paper or through the Department's online system.

Gather your FEIN, ownership information and a description of the taxes you expect to owe before starting the registration.

Opening the account

Bring the stamped Articles of Organization, the EIN confirmation letter, the operating agreement and identification for signers to the bank. Keeping business and personal money in separate accounts from the start is what keeps the liability shield credible.

Key takeaways

  • The EIN is free and issued by the IRS.
  • Register separately with the Missouri Department of Revenue using Form 2643A if you owe state taxes.
  • A separate bank account protects the liability shield.
