New Hampshire lesson 4 of 6
Get an EIN and register for business taxes
Your EIN identifies the LLC to the IRS and to banks. Separately, New Hampshire requires certain LLCs to register with the Department of Revenue Administration once they meet the state's business tax filing thresholds.
Applying for the EIN
Apply for free directly on the IRS website once your Certificate of Formation is approved. If the responsible party has a US social security number or ITIN, the number is issued immediately online; otherwise, the application is filed on Form SS-4 by fax or mail.
Registering with the Department of Revenue Administration
New Hampshire has no separate sales tax registration, since there is no state sales tax. What you do need to track is whether your LLC will owe the Business Profits Tax or Business Enterprise Tax, both filed with the Department of Revenue Administration, and whether you have employees requiring other state-level registrations such as unemployment insurance through NH Employment Security.
Opening the account
Bring the certified Certificate of Formation from QuickStart, your EIN confirmation letter, an operating agreement if you have one, and identification for signers and significant owners. Keep business and personal funds in separate accounts from day one.
Key takeaways
- The EIN is free and issued by the IRS.
- There is no state sales tax registration, but BPT and BET filing obligations are tracked separately with Revenue Administration.
- Employer registrations, such as unemployment insurance, are handled through NH Employment Security.
