Pennsylvania lesson 4 of 6
Get an EIN and open a bank account
Once your Certificate of Organization is filed, the next steps are getting a federal tax number and, if applicable, registering separately with the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue.
Applying for the EIN
Apply on the IRS website at no charge once the Certificate of Organization is approved. Applicants with a US social security number or ITIN generally receive the EIN immediately online; others apply on Form SS-4 by fax or post, which takes longer.
Registering for Pennsylvania taxes
If your LLC will collect sales tax, withhold employer taxes, or owes certain other Pennsylvania business taxes, register separately through myPATH, the Department of Revenue's online tax system. This is a different registration from the EIN and from the Certificate of Organization.
Opening the account
Bring the filed Certificate of Organization, the EIN confirmation letter, an operating agreement, and identification for signers and significant owners. Ask ahead if any owner is outside the US, since documentation requirements vary by bank.
Keeping one clean line between business and personal money is what keeps the LLC's liability protection credible if it is ever challenged.
Key takeaways
- The EIN is free and comes from the IRS, not the Commonwealth.
- myPATH handles state tax registration separately from formation.
- A dedicated business bank account protects the liability shield.
