Florida lesson 1 of 6
Name your Florida LLC
Sunbiz will reject an Articles of Organization filing outright if the name is not distinguishable from one already on record, so search before you pay the $125 fee.
Required wording
Under Florida Statutes s. 605.0112, a Florida LLC name must contain the words Limited Liability Company or the abbreviation LLC or L.L.C. Punctuation and capitalisation are not treated as distinguishing, so Acme LLC and Acme, L.L.C. read as the same name to Sunbiz.
- Acceptable: Gulf Coast Rentals LLC, Gulf Coast Rentals L.L.C.
- Not acceptable: wording implying a bank, trust or state agency without the relevant approval
- The name cannot already be on record for another Florida entity
Searching Sunbiz
Use the Sunbiz search to check for exact and close matches before you file. Florida does not offer a paid name reservation service, so there is no way to lock a name in ahead of filing; the only way to secure it is to file the Articles of Organization itself.
If you plan to trade under a different name from your registered LLC name, that is a fictitious name in Florida, registered separately with the Division of Corporations, not a naming choice inside the Articles of Organization.
Series LLCs
Florida's Uniform Protected Series provisions took effect July 1, 2026. An existing Florida LLC can now designate one or more protected series, each able to sue and be sued and hold assets separately, through a dedicated online filing system rather than through the main Sunbiz portal.
🇺🇸 Check United States company name availability
Search the official United States state registry before you file. Opens the government portal in a new tab.
Tip: also confirm the .com domain and matching social handles are free before you commit.
Key takeaways
- End the name with Limited Liability Company, LLC or L.L.C.
- Search Sunbiz before filing; there is no paid reservation option.
- Florida now allows series LLCs through a dedicated filing system.
