Indiana lesson 4 of 6

Get an EIN and open a bank account

Indiana does not issue a state tax number automatically when your LLC is approved. Your federal EIN, plus a separate state registration if you owe Indiana taxes, are what banks and the Department of Revenue will look for.

Applying for the EIN

Apply on the IRS website at no cost once the Articles of Organization are approved. If the responsible party has a US social security number or ITIN, the EIN is issued immediately online. Otherwise the application goes in on Form SS-4 by fax or post.

Registering with the Department of Revenue

If the LLC will collect sales tax, withhold employee income tax, or owes certain other Indiana taxes, register using the Business Tax Application, known as BT-1, through INBiz. Registration issues an Indiana Taxpayer Identification Number, which is separate from your federal EIN.

Gather your FEIN, ownership details and expected start date before you begin the BT-1, since the online application does not save an incomplete session indefinitely.

Opening the account

Bring the approved Articles of Organization, your EIN confirmation letter, the operating agreement and identification for signers to the bank. Keeping personal and business money in separate accounts from day one is what keeps the liability shield credible if it is ever tested.

Key takeaways

  • The EIN is free and issued by the IRS, separate from any state registration.
  • The BT-1 through INBiz is how you register for Indiana sales tax, withholding and other state taxes.
  • Keep business and personal money in separate accounts.
