Nevada lesson 4 of 6
Get an EIN and open a bank account
Nevada does not issue a state tax identification number as part of formation. The federal EIN is what banks and the IRS use to identify your LLC.
Applying for the EIN
Apply free of charge on the IRS website once the Articles of Organization are filed. If the responsible party has a US social security number or ITIN, the number is issued immediately online. Otherwise, the application is filed on Form SS-4 by fax or post.
Opening the account
Bring the filed Articles of Organization, the EIN confirmation letter, your operating agreement, and identification for signers to a Nevada bank or credit union. Because Nevada does not list members publicly, some banks will separately ask for a signed operating agreement to confirm who actually owns the LLC.
Nevada's privacy rules protect what is on the public record, not what a bank, the IRS or a court can require you to disclose. Keeping business and personal money separate still matters just as much as in any other state.
Key takeaways
- The EIN is free and comes from the IRS, not the state of Nevada.
- Banks may ask for the operating agreement to confirm ownership since it is not on the public record.
- Separate accounts remain essential to preserving the liability shield.
