New Jersey lesson 1 of 6

Name your New Jersey LLC

New Jersey checks your proposed name against its business name records when you submit the Public Records Filing. A name that is not distinguishable from one already on file gets the filing bounced, so check first rather than after you have paid the $125 fee.

Required wording

A New Jersey LLC name must contain the words Limited Liability Company or an accepted abbreviation such as LLC or L.L.C. The words Limited and Company may be shortened to Ltd and Co within that phrase.

  • Acceptable: Garden State Supply LLC, Garden State Supply L.L.C.
  • Not acceptable: wording implying a bank, trust or state agency without the relevant approval
  • Not acceptable: a name identical or confusingly similar to an existing registered entity

Checking availability

Search the state's business name records before you file. New Jersey does not offer a long formal name reservation process in the way some states do, so most filers move straight from a clear search to submitting the Public Records Filing itself.

If you plan to trade under a name different from your registered LLC name, that is a separate alternate name filing with the Division of Revenue, not something the Certificate of Formation covers.

Free Name Availability Check

🇺🇸 Check United States company name availability

Search the official United States state registry before you file. Opens the government portal in a new tab.

Tip: also confirm the .com domain and matching social handles are free before you commit.

Key takeaways

  • End the name with LLC, L.L.C. or Limited Liability Company.
  • Search the state's records before filing to avoid a rejected Public Records Filing.
  • A trading name different from the registered name needs its own alternate name filing.
