Oklahoma lesson 4 of 6

Get an EIN and register with the Oklahoma Tax Commission

Your EIN identifies the LLC to the IRS and to banks. Registering separately with the Oklahoma Tax Commission is what sets up any state tax accounts your LLC actually needs.

Applying for the EIN

Apply for free directly on the IRS website once your Articles of Organization are approved. If the responsible party has a US social security number or ITIN, the number is issued immediately online; otherwise the application is filed on Form SS-4 by fax or post.

Registering with the Tax Commission

If you sell taxable goods or services, you need a sales tax permit from the Oklahoma Tax Commission before making sales. If you have employees, you need a withholding tax account. Registration is handled through the Tax Commission's business registration process, separate from the Secretary of State filing.

Opening the account

Take the filed Articles of Organization, the EIN confirmation letter, an operating agreement if you have one, and identification for signers and significant owners to open a business bank account. Route all business income and expenses through it, since mixing personal and business funds is one of the fastest ways to undercut an LLC's liability protection.

Key takeaways

  • The EIN is free and issued by the IRS.
  • Tax Commission registration is separate from the EIN and needed for sales tax or withholding accounts.
  • Keep business and personal funds in separate accounts.
