Free EIN Application Guide (SS-4)
Step-by-step walkthrough of IRS Form SS-4 for US and international founders, including ITIN alternatives for non-US owners of a US LLC.
What is an EIN?
An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a 9-digit tax ID assigned by the IRS to a US business. You need one to open a US bank account, hire employees or file federal taxes.
Apply in 4 steps
- 1. Form your LLC or Corporation first. The IRS requires a formed entity before issuing an EIN.
- 2. If you have a US SSN or ITIN, apply free online at IRS.gov. You receive the EIN instantly.
- 3. If you are a non-US founder without an SSN or ITIN, file Form SS-4 by fax to the IRS International Unit (+1 855-215-1627). Turnaround is 4 to 8 weeks.
- 4. Store the EIN CP-575 letter safely. Banks, Stripe and payment processors will ask for it.
