Arizona lesson 4 of 6
Get an EIN and open a bank account
Arizona does not issue its own tax identification number at formation. Your federal EIN is what banks, payment processors and the Department of Revenue will use to identify the LLC.
Applying for the EIN
Apply on the IRS website at no cost once the Articles of Organization are approved. If the responsible party has a US social security number or ITIN, the EIN issues immediately online. Otherwise the application goes in on Form SS-4 by fax or post.
Opening the account
Bring the approved Articles of Organization, the EIN confirmation letter, your operating agreement and identification for signers and significant owners. Arizona banks vary in what they ask from non-resident owners, so confirm requirements before the appointment.
Running personal expenses through the business account is one of the fastest ways to lose the protection an LLC is supposed to provide.
Key takeaways
- The EIN is free and comes from the IRS, not from Arizona.
- Apply after the Articles of Organization are approved so details match.
- Keep business and personal money in separate accounts from day one.
