Wyoming lesson 5 of 6

EIN, banking and Wyoming taxes

Wyoming's tax position is the simplest of any state covered in this course, but simple does not mean nothing to do.

The EIN

Apply free at the IRS once the Articles are approved. Owners with a social security number or ITIN get the number immediately online. Non-resident owners generally file Form SS-4 by fax or post, which takes weeks rather than minutes, so start it early if a bank account is on the critical path.

State taxes

Wyoming imposes no personal income tax and no corporate income tax. What it does charge is the annual report licence tax covered in the next lesson, plus sales and use tax if you sell taxable goods or certain services in the state, administered by the Department of Revenue. Property tax applies to property located in Wyoming.

No Wyoming income tax does not mean no federal tax. Your LLC profits still flow onto a federal return, and your state of residence may tax them too.

Banking as a non-resident

Non-resident owners often find bank onboarding the hardest step, not formation. Expect to provide the stamped Articles, EIN letter, operating agreement, proof of address and identification, and expect at least some banks to require an in person visit.

Key takeaways

  • The EIN is free from the IRS; non-residents use Form SS-4.
  • Wyoming has no state income tax at any level.
  • Sales and use tax registration applies if you sell taxable goods in Wyoming.
